Ania Winkler - Culture Justice

November 2023

After an initial collaboration in May 2022 with Angélique Pichon’s residency, le 19, Crac is renewing its offer of practical art workshops for prisoners at the Montbéliard prison as part of the Culture and Justice programme. This year’s guest artist is Ania Winkler, invited by Stéphane Prigent, curator of the exhibition Fais-le toi-même si t’es pas content (Do it yourself if you’re not happy), on show simultaneously at the art centre.

Ania Winkler is a photographer, cinematographer and director. She studied photography in Paris and Prague (FAMU) and also trained her eye with Czech theatre photographer Jaroslav Krejci. Her desire to learn more about Poland, her country of origin, and her taste for the byways of life, led her in particular to the gypsies. His career has been punctuated by decisive encounters, notably with the painter Pascal Pichon, the video artist Olivier Garouste, and Justine Wojtyniak and her partners in the Laboratoire Impossible. Her artistic approach veers between animality, suspension, visible and invisible borders, and a lyrical universe that reveals inner realities.

As part of the Culture and Justice project, Ania Winkler is devising a series of photographic workshops. The challenges and objectives of her proposal, entitled “From One World to Another”, will be the same as those of the art centre, namely to generate an active and creative contribution to the urgent need for social cohesion, to stimulate a dynamic that will link the inside and outside of the prison, and to consider artistic practice as a lever for creating common ground.
