OUTISIDE THE WALLS

The 19th, Crac, in partnership with the Musées de Montbéliard and the Pays de Montbéliard Agglomeration, is offering a contemporary look on the heritage of the “Diairi”, highlighted by the exhibition Des coiffes et nous. Mémoires de territoire at the Hôtel Beurnier-Rossel Museum of Art and History (Nov. 2022 - Sept. 2023), through the residency of Ségolène Thuillart happening in the region.

Ségolène Thuillart (b. 1988, lives and works between Tours and Paris) goes out to meet local people and works with the material (sound, written, plastic) that they are willing to entrust to her. Her work explores the plasticity of language and notions of work and living together through performances and sound pieces.

During her residency, Ségolène Thuillart offered embroidery workshops to residents of Saint-Julien-lès-Montbéliard, Valentigney and the Chiffogne district of Montbéliard, so that they could discuss their living spaces and the symbols intertwined to those places with her. This participatory project helped to forge links between heritage and contemporary art, while engaging residents from very different areas in a common project. These encounters led to the creation of a sound and embroidered portrait of the Pays de Montbéliard, including a contemporary crest of the conurbation. All these productions were presented at the Musée Beurnier-Rossel in September 2023 during the European Heritage Days.

Project funded by Les couleurs de l’agglo (Pays de Montbéliard Agglomération), the Muséesde Montbéliard and the 19, Crac.
